| The McCarty Gang Cache |
partner Butch Cassidy but was also very colorful. His love of fast white Horses and beautiful young Blonde's often led him to trouble. After lying low for close to a year Tom, his brother Bill and Bills spoiled son Fred met at the abandoned Horse Thieves Hang-out ( still called the Robbers Roust Canyon )to plan there next big heist. After deciding that another attempt in Telluride, after there failure with Butch Cassidy, was not a real good idea they decided on the Farmers Bank of Delta. As was tradition before a big job they would gather together all they had left in cash ( in this case about $3,000 in Gold coins ) from previous jobs such as Telluride. They then placed it all in a Saddle Bag, wrapped that in an Oil Cloth, then buried the bundle high and dry somewhere in the twisted Maze of the Robbers Roust. You see it was understood by all that everyone may not come back alive but the Cache would be there for those who survive. So in the Fall of 1893 the McCartys set off on there next big job, but things soon went ashtray. Upon arriving at the Bank in Delta Tom wisely opted to hold the getaway Horses as Bill and the inexperienced, know it all, brat Fred head into the Bank. Tom heard shots fired and the men came running out with Bill yelling "lets go, Fred shot the Teller". As the 3 men fled the scene 2 more shots rang out from a high powered Sharps Rifle belonging to Cash Simpson, the local Hardware Store owner. 2 shots equaled 2 deaths, Tom being the lone survivor, who ran white Horse Suzy over the uncompahgre Plateau and straight into Moab Utah and then hoped the Train for Oregon or the likes, never turning back and never recovering the Cache left back at the Robbers Roust Canyon. There have been a number of searcher's but as of this time there have been no reports of this Cache ever being found. This Canyon is located above Nucla in the Tabeguache trail area on the west side of the Uncompahgre Plateau and just sounds like an awsome area to look for buried treasure. I plan a exploratory voyage into the Canyon over the Summer but would be interested if any one would be interested in Joining us this Fall for some major searching.
