Then & Again
Adventures in Photography
I have to admit that I was inspired by a famous
Colorado photographer named John Fielder.  A
number of years back I had an opportunity to watch a
slide show put on by Mr. Fielder promoting his new
photo collection called "Then and Now".  What Mr.
Fielder had done was put together a collection of
photos by William H. Jackson, who made his fame
photographing the Western United States, many,
many, many of Colorado.  What Mr.Fielder did with his
collection of Colo. shots is set out to reproduce them,
kind of a study of what has changed and often not
changed in a good 100 yrs.  Anyhow, I was inspired to
try my hand at this just for fun, but first I had to find
some photos to pursue.  I had found a few locally, the
Walker Studio I discovered in Montrose had a great
collection but was fairly limited, then I heard about
the western photography collection at the Denver
Public Library. This site turns out to be an absolute
glory hole of old photos that you can purchase and
    down load.
I kind of cheated in that I mostly choose pictures
that I can recognize, then I try to search out the
exact spot from which the photo was taken and, trying
to get as close as possible, I will hold the photo up in
one hand and my trusty digital camera in the other to
line up the shot.  Being the D.P.L has such a huge
collection I branched away from only Jackson Photos
to include many different views and years.
As I had said earlier, it is amazing how much has
changed and just as amazing how much has not, click on
